The Rôle of the Thyroid in the Regulation of the Blood Cholesterol of Rabbits
نویسندگان
چکیده
1. The blood cholesterol of rabbits on a normal diet without added cholesterol is increased only slightly (19 per cent) by thyroidectomy. 2. In rabbits with a hypercholesterolemia due to long continued cholesterol feeding, thyroidectomy causes a marked rise (137 per cent) in the blood cholesterol. This rise is usually maintained. 3. When long continued cholesterol feeding has failed to cause a rise in the blood cholesterol of rabbits, thyroidectomy abolishes this resistance and a hypercholesterolemia is promptly produced. 4. A single injection of thyroxin causes a significant drop in the blood cholesterol of rabbits with hypercholesterolemia. This reaction is not influenced by thyroidectomy. 5. Potassium iodide causes an increase in the blood cholesterol of rabbits with hypercholesterolemia. This reaction is not influenced by thyroidectomy in contrast to the effect of KI in preventing a rise in blood cholesterol when given concurrently from the beginning of cholesterol feeding, an effect which is abolished by thyroidectomy. It is suggested that two different mechanisms are involved. 6. A single injection of insulin produces a fall in the blood cholesterol of rabbits with hypercholesterolemia. If anything, thyroidectomy increases the magnitude of this effect.

Objective(s) In addition to antihypertensive effects, amlodipine may exhibit cardiovascular protective effects in heart tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of amlodipine and/or high cholesterol diet on blood, heart tissue concentration and mRNA expression of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in male New Zealand white rabbits. Materials and Methods A total of 40 male New Zealand rabbi...
متن کاملStudy of steroidal compounds from peel and seed of some pomegranate cultivars (Punica granatum L.) and investigating the effect of pomegranate seed oil on blood lipid levels in hypercholesterolemic rabbits
Background: High level of blood cholesterol can cause diseases such as atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and increase the chance of apoplexy and fatty liver. Unsaturated fatty acids play important roles in preventing cardiovascular diseases because they decrease total cholesterols and LDL-C in the blood. Objective: The study investigates some sterol compounds of Ira...

Coastal waters in northern part of Hormuz Strait receive large inputs of anthropogenic pollutants. This study was conducted to determine the effects of environmental contaminants on plasma enzymes, thyroid hormones and biochemical blood parameters of Periophthalmus argentilineatus to monitor marine pollution from northern part of Hormuz strait. For this purpose, a total of 90 specimens were col...
